NEU Gombe Matriculates 400 Fresh Students, Reaffirms Commitment to Academic Excellence and Student Welfare
North-Eastern University (NEU), Gombe, the first private university in Gombe State, has formally inducted over 400 newly admitted students during its fourth matriculation ceremony, marking another milestone in the institution’s steady growth.
The ceremony, held on Saturday at the university campus, witnessed the official swearing-in of students admitted into various academic programmes across NEU’s faculties. The colourful event attracted university management, government representatives, traditional rulers, parents, and other stakeholders in the education sector.
Addressing the matriculating students, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Yusuph Amuda Yahaya, congratulated them on securing admission into the institution and welcomed them into the NEU academic community. He assured the students and their parents that the university remains fully committed to academic excellence, discipline, and integrity.
Professor Yahaya urged the new students to remain focused on their studies, obey university regulations, and uphold good moral conduct throughout their academic journey. He emphasised that NEU is determined to sustain and strengthen its reputation as a centre of quality teaching, learning, and research in Nigeria.
According to him, the university continues to invest in modern learning facilities, highly qualified academic staff, and student-friendly policies designed to promote scholarship, innovation, and sound character. He added that NEU provides an enabling environment where students can thrive academically and socially.
In his remarks, the Pro-Chancellor, Dr Sani Jauro, advised the students to take their education seriously and remain committed to the pursuit of knowledge. He noted that the university was established not only to award degrees but also to mould responsible individuals with strong moral values and discipline.
Dr Jauro also announced a major student welfare initiative, revealing that the university has provided free cooking gas for students. He explained that the initiative is aimed at easing students’ daily living conditions while promoting safety and convenience on campus.
Representing the Governor of Gombe State, Inuwa Yahaya, the Commissioner for Higher Education, Muhammad Shettima Gadam, expressed satisfaction with the progress recorded by the university within a short period. He commended NEU for expanding access to university education in the state and contributing to human capital development.
The commissioner urged the matriculating students to maximise the opportunity offered by the institution by dedicating themselves to learning, personal growth, and responsible citizenship.
Also speaking at the event, the Commissioner for Education, Professor Aishatu Umar Maigari, praised the university’s strong emphasis on discipline and moral upbringing alongside academic training. She highlighted the critical role of private universities in complementing government efforts to widen access to higher education and assured NEU of the state government’s continued support.
The ceremony was attended by notable traditional leaders, including Alhaji Yaya Hammari, Waziri of Yariman Gombe, and Hayatu Bala Magaji, District Head of Gombe. Highlights of the event included the presentation of awards and prizes to outstanding students in recognition of their exceptional academic performance.
The matriculation ceremony underscored NEU Gombe’s growing status as a key player in the state’s education landscape and its commitment to producing competent, ethical, and future-ready graduates.
