FEDPOLY Damaturu Career Development Service Centre Officials Visit FEDPODAM Staff School
The Career Development Services Centre of the Federal Polytechnic Damaturu on Thursday presented a career talk at the Polytechnic Staff School (FEDPODAM Staff School) as part of its outreach programme guide students on career planning and skill acquisition.
The team, led by the Director of the Centre, Dr. Zainab Ibrahim Ciroma, delivered a presentation on the theme “Catching Them Young.”
According to Dr. Ciroma, the visit aimed to help students especially those in SS3 understand the importance of career planning and skills acquisition as they prepare for life after secondary school.
Dr. Ciroma noted that many students tend to focus on what they consider “noble” professions such as medicine, engineering, surveying, and architecture. However, she emphasized that only a few show interest in vocational careers such as plumbing, mechanics, carpentry, and tailoring—professions that are equally important to national development.
She pointed out that as the world moves toward a skills-based economy, every nation that desires true and sustainable development must build its foundation on the expertise of skilled men and women.
During her talk, Dr. Ciroma encouraged students to reflect on important career questions such as:
What do I want to become in the future?
What field should I study?
Am I in the right class for my chosen career?
Does my career path require specific skills?
Where can I go for guidance and advice?
She explained that the Career Development Centre is equipped with modern tools procured through TETFund intervention and initiated by the Rector, Dr. Ibrahim Bello Bashir to support students and staff in making informed career choices.
These tools include access to the Internet, Artificial Intelligence (AI) applications, and various online content platforms designed to enhance learning and self-discovery.
Dr. Ciroma further reminded the students that beyond academics and skills, character remains a key ingredient for success. She advised them to develop good communication skills, integrity, honesty, hard work, dedication, good character, and discipline.
She also encouraged the students to visit the Career Development Centre to explore available opportunities and receive guidance in planning for their future careers.
Dr. Ciroma was accompanied on the visit by other members of the Centre’s team, including Hassan Dauda, Mustapha Sheriff, Abubakar Arabi, and Abdullahi Darazo.
Meanwhile present at the presentation were the Coordinator of the school Dr. Amina Abdullahi, the Principal among other staff.
Also present during the presentation were the coordinator of the school Dr. Lami Abdullahi, the Principal Tasimda Chinanda among other staff.
