CBN POS Dual Connectivity Deadline: CBN Sets Deadline for POS Operators to Switch to Dual Connectivity | What Agents Must Know

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has issued a firm deadline for Point-of-Sale (POS) operators and fintech service providers to transition fully to dual connectivity systems, a move aimed at reducing transaction failures and improving payment reliability across the country.

According to the new directive, all POS terminals must now support at least two network options to ensure stable connections during transactions. The CBN said the decision became necessary following persistent complaints from merchants and customers about failed or delayed payments linked to poor network performance.

Under the policy, operators are required to complete the integration and testing of dual connectivity before the stated deadline. Any POS terminal that fails to comply risks being disconnected from payment networks, which could affect thousands of agents nationwide.

Industry experts believe the transition will significantly enhance payment efficiency, especially during peak periods when network congestion is common.

However, some operators have expressed concerns about the cost of upgrading devices and the possibility of temporary service disruptions during migration.

Fintech companies and banks have begun notifying their merchants of the mandatory upgrade, urging them to ensure their POS terminals meet the new CBN standard to avoid interruptions in service delivery.

As the deadline approaches, merchants are advised to verify their device compatibility, contact their service providers, and complete necessary updates. The Nigeria’s cashless economy and improve customer trust in digital payments.
